Virtual Mediation Services — Professional Mediation From Wherever You Are

Why We Chose Virtual — And Why Our Clients Prefer It

Compass Mediation Group conducts all sessions virtually. This isn't a pandemic-era workaround or a temporary accommodation — it's a deliberate choice, and here's why.

When people sit in a conference room during one of the most difficult conversations of their lives, there's an inherent awkwardness. The fluorescent lights, the unfamiliar surroundings, the forced proximity. Now imagine instead that you're at your own kitchen table, with your notes organized in front of you, a cup of tea at hand, and the ability to take a deep breath in a space that feels like yours. That's the environment where productive, honest conversations happen.

Our lead mediator, Alisa Kharis, brings 25+ years of mediation experience, a Juris Doctorate from Seattle University School of Law, a B.A. in Political Science (Cum Laude) from Washington State University, and 16 years of prior legal practice — handling family law, civil litigation, criminal law, entertainment law, and business law in Washington state courts — before dedicating herself fully to mediation. She holds a Master Mediator certification from the International Mediation Association (IMA) — earned through a rigorous year-long training program — and is an IRS Enrolled Agent. She brings the same depth of expertise to every virtual session that any in-person mediator would — with the added benefits that only a virtual format can provide.

How Virtual Mediation Works

Our virtual mediation process is straightforward and designed to feel natural, even if you've never participated in a video conference before.

1

Step 1: Schedule Your Free Consultation

Contact us by phone at (888) 851-8856 or book online. During this initial conversation, we'll learn about your situation, explain the mediation process, answer your questions, and determine if mediation is a good fit. This consultation is free and carries no obligation.

2

Step 2: Preparation and Intake

Once you decide to move forward, we'll send you intake forms and, depending on your case, requests for relevant documents — financial records for divorce mediation, business documents for commercial disputes, estate paperwork for inheritance matters. This preparation ensures your sessions are focused and productive.

3

Step 3: Receive Your Secure Session Link

Before each session, you'll receive a link to our secure video conferencing platform. Click the link at your scheduled time — no software installation required. We use an encrypted, confidential platform that protects your privacy.

4

Step 4: Participate in Mediation Sessions

Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes. During each session, Alisa facilitates structured conversation between the parties, helping you identify priorities, explore options, and work toward agreements. Depending on the complexity of your case, most mediations are completed in 3 to 6 sessions.

The virtual format includes several powerful tools:

  • Breakout rooms — When either party needs a private moment to think or when the mediator needs to speak with each person individually, we use separate virtual rooms. This replicates the "caucus" technique used in in-person mediation, but more seamlessly.

  • Screen sharing — Financial documents, proposed parenting schedules, or asset inventories can be shared on screen so everyone is literally looking at the same information.

  • Document collaboration — Draft agreements can be reviewed together in real time, ensuring transparency and accuracy.

5

Step 5: Finalize Your Agreement

Once all issues are resolved, we draft a comprehensive mediation agreement. You'll have the opportunity to review it, have it examined by independent legal counsel if you wish, and then sign. For divorce mediations, this agreement becomes the foundation for your court filings.

The Benefits of Virtual Mediation

Comfort and Emotional Safety

Mediation addresses some of life's most emotionally charged topics — the end of a marriage, the custody of children, the future of a business. Being in your own environment gives you a sense of grounding and control that an unfamiliar office can't provide. Clients consistently report feeling calmer, more focused, and more able to engage constructively during virtual sessions.

No Travel, No Logistics

No driving across town. No fighting for parking. No sitting in a waiting room watching the clock. Virtual mediation gives you back the hours you would have spent traveling and lets you put that energy where it matters — into the process itself.

Flexibility in Scheduling

Without the constraints of physical office hours and travel time, we can offer more flexible scheduling. Early morning sessions before work, evening sessions after the kids are in bed, and lunchtime sessions that don't require you to leave the office are all possible.

Privacy and Confidentiality

No one sees you walk into a mediation office. No one spots your car in the parking lot. Virtual mediation adds a layer of personal privacy that many clients appreciate, especially in smaller communities or professional circles where discretion matters.

Works Across Distance

Virtual mediation is essential when the parties don't live in the same city — or even the same state. Whether one spouse has relocated for work, a business partner is in another region, or family members are spread across the country, virtual mediation connects everyone regardless of geography.

Virtual Mediation for Interstate Situations

One of the most significant advantages of virtual mediation is its ability to serve people in different states. This is particularly relevant for:

  • Spouses who have relocated — One of you stayed in Seattle while the other moved to Arizona for a job. Virtual mediation means you don't have to fly back for every session.

  • Military families — Service members stationed away from their family's home state can participate fully in mediation from their current location.

  • Business partners in different regions — A partnership dispute between co-owners in California and Oregon doesn't require anyone to travel.

  • Families spread across the country — Estate and inheritance disputes often involve siblings and relatives in multiple states. Virtual mediation brings everyone to the same table.

A Note on Interstate Legal Considerations

When parties are in different states, questions about jurisdiction — which state's laws apply, where to file — can be complex. Alisa's 16 years of prior legal practice in Washington state courts — handling cases across King, Pierce, Kitsap, Whatcom, and Grays Harbor counties — combined with her IRS Enrolled Agent credentials (including an Oregon license) and deep familiarity with the legal frameworks in Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona, means she's well-positioned to help you understand your options. We always recommend that parties consult with attorneys licensed in their respective states for specific legal advice.

What You Need to Participate

The technology requirements are minimal and intentionally simple:

  • A device with a camera and microphone — A laptop or desktop computer is ideal, but a tablet or smartphone works as well

  • A reliable internet connection — Standard broadband or a strong Wi-Fi signal is sufficient

  • A quiet, private space — Somewhere you can speak freely without being overheard

  • Your documents — Any relevant paperwork that pertains to your case, accessible for reference during the session

That's it. No special software to install. No accounts to create. We send you a link, you click it, and you're in the session.

What If I'm Not Comfortable with Technology?

We hear this concern occasionally, and it's completely understandable. Here's what we do: before your first session, we offer a brief technology check where we connect with you on the platform, make sure your camera and microphone work, show you the basic features, and answer any questions. By the time your actual session begins, the technology fades into the background — it's just a conversation.

Who Virtual Mediation Serves Best

Virtual mediation works for virtually everyone, but it's especially valuable for:

  • People in areas with limited local mediation options

  • Busy professionals who can't easily take time during the workday for travel and appointments

  • Parents with young children who need flexibility around caregiving

  • Individuals with mobility challenges or health concerns

  • Anyone who feels more comfortable and in control in their own environment

  • Parties who live in different cities or states and need a way to mediate without extensive travel

Our Commitment to Security and Confidentiality

Confidentiality isn't just a feature of our virtual platform — it's a foundational principle of mediation itself. Everything discussed in mediation is confidential and cannot be used in court proceedings. Our virtual platform reinforces this with:

  • End-to-end encryption for all video sessions

  • No recording of sessions without explicit consent from all parties

  • Secure document sharing with access controls

  • Password-protected sessions

  • Compliance with industry-standard privacy practices

Important Notice

Compass Mediation Group provides professional mediation services only. We do not provide legal advice, legal representation, or act as attorneys for any party. Alisa Kharis is a former practicing attorney who now works exclusively as a mediator. Her legal background gives her a deep understanding of the legal landscape, which enriches the mediation process, but does not constitute the practice of law. Clients are encouraged to consult with independent attorneys for legal counsel regarding their specific situations.
